I went with Emma and a friend on one of the free tours of London’s old Middlesex County Courthouse and Jail and the place has seen some extraordinary chapters of local history.

A few stories worth knowing:

• The Black Donnellys trials were conducted here.
• “Pegleg” Brown ended up on the gallows here.
• London’s first hanging went spectacularly wrong. The sheriff reportedly had to go and obtain another rope before the execution could be carried out a second time.

Emma looks considerably happier to be in the Middlesex County Jail than most of its previous occupants.

🍁 Fall in Love with the Forest City returns to City Hall

The Gist: One of London’s favourite fall traditions is back! Head up to City Hall’s top-floor observation deck for free and take in sweeping views of the city’s changing fall colours. It’s open Thursdays and Fridays from 5 p.m. to sunset, plus Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. through October 25. (Heads up: it’ll be closed Sunday, October 11.)

Why It Matters: It’s a pretty great way to see London in full fall mode, and there’s a feel-good bonus too. Seasonal treats and hot drinks will be available by donation, with all proceeds supporting United Way Elgin Middlesex. Last year, visitors helped raise more than $4,000.

🏪 Hasty Market brings The Market On to London

The Gist: Hasty Market is bringing its newer The Market On concept to London after signing franchise partners Bilal and Azzra. The format goes beyond a traditional convenience store, with fresh groceries, prepared meals, grab-and-go options and everyday essentials. The London store will join four existing locations across Ontario, with three more expected to open over the next six months.

Why It Matters: It’ll give Londoners another convenient option for groceries, quick meals and everyday essentials, while also bringing a growing Ontario retail concept to the city. For the new franchise owners, it’s also the start of a locally operated business serving the London community.

For nights when wings and comfort food are calling, Wing Boyz has plenty to choose from. Their wings come tossed in flavours like Maple Bacon Dry Rub, Thai Sweet Spicy and Spicy Garlic Parm, with burgers, wraps, loaded fries, poutine and more rounding out the menu.

Wing Boyz now has two London locations, with the newer Southdale spot joining its Summerside restaurant, plus locations in Kingsville, Chatham and St. Thomas.
