My roof is unfriendly - steep, with a large valley, several dormers, a chimney, multiple elevations, skylights, and curved areas. When we bought our house, the prior homeowner recommended that we go with Armour Shield when the roof eventually needed to be replaced. When that day came, I included Armour Shield in the list of companies I got quotes from. They had a scope of work that was the most complete, their warranty was tied for the best from the companies I contacted, they were explicit with contingency possibility and pricing, and the owner indicated he does not use subcontractors. I did all the usual checks (e.g. WSIB) for a job of this nature (high dollar value, high risk), and also checked for accreditations. For example, Armour Shield can be found on the CertainTeed website as possessing a 'SELECT ShingleMaster' designation, which has requirements worth searching up, e.g. requires maintaining appropriate insurance, etc. which is a different level of verification than being shown a paper COI. Maintaining that qualification is a good quality signal that I could verify before hiring - I am not an expert on roofing, so look for external quality signals beyond just Google reviews. With all facets of the quotes taken into consideration, we went with them despite their price being in the top half of the companies I contacted. By the account of my father-in-law (who his retired from all kinds of residential work including roofing, and was by good fortune visiting while the work was being done), the roof was done professionally, proper safety practices were followed, the owner was seen providing oversight / was hands-on, and they created no mess or damage.
